FAQ's for General Dentistry

Why do I need to see a dentist and hygienist, don’t they do the same thing?

No, whilst your dentist and hygienist work closely together, they don’t do the same things. Your dentist will oversee the overall health of your teeth and mouth; much like a G.P. does for your body. They will look at everything including checking for cavities and your bite. Your hygienist is focused on the prevention of gum disease and will look specifically at the hygiene and cleanliness of your teeth and gums to prevent periodontal disease. It’s very important to see both at least once a year.

Should I use a manual or electric toothbrush?

Both work well and there is no real evidence to show that one is better over the other, but it is important that you are using both correctly! Your hygienist can provide tips on how you should be brushing your teeth.

Should I use mouthwash?

Mouthwash is a good addition to your oral hygiene but should not be substituted for brushing and flossing. Mouthwashes that contain fluoride are the better option as they help to prevent plaque forming. Mouthwashes also help to fight bad breath.

I went to Watford Dental Practice for a dental hygienization done by hygienist Denisa and her assistant Ana Maria, who was very nice and kind from the moment we entered the building!

My family and I have been using this dentist for a number of years now.

Dr Hirani is knowledgable friendly and polite. She often recommends the course of treatment that is best for the patient versus other dentists I have visited who seem to want to just take money for extra treatments!

The reception staff are also pleasant and helpful to me, my wife and my children. This is often against a backdrop of when the a dental practice is busy, or when dealing with some challenging clients.

Would recommend this as a they do NHS treatment and have good dental hygienists.

There is free parking on the surrounding streets after 10am and before 5pm.

My family and I have been seeing Dr Shah for about 15 years. When I first began seeing him my teeth was not in the greatest condition and the work he has done since to make them neater and comfortable via the NHS is phenomenal. He always takes time to listen to your issues and deals with problems efficiently. He's very gentle and has been excellent with my daughter who's a little nervous. Overall the best dentist I've ever had and highly recommended. The practise aa a whole is friendly, clean and the staff are always polite and helpful.
